Two
Two is the number of duality. If one is the self, two is the self and the other. Two is the world in which one finds itself. Where zero and one were one and the same, one and two stand divided. The former being the relationship of mother and son, latter being siblings, Uranus and Gaia, the heavens and the earth. Man and woman have taken proper form, lying above and below one another, equal and opposite, representing the two halves the individual.
Taurus, the second sign of the zodiac, is the sign of fixed earth, which is to say the world. It is ruled by Venus, the goddess of beauty, sensuality and love. These are things found in the world, the objects of the senses. Taurus and the second house in astrology are related to work and wealth, material possessions and ways in which we create and obtain them. One works on improving the other and in doing so improves the self.
Taurus also represents the moon, which is exalted in Taurus. The horns of the bull are likened to the crescent moon which is one of images depicted in its symbol. It also continues from the symbol of Aries. The zygote has split into two. One a complete circle, the other only half a circle. Not a semi-circle with a straight side, but wide open as though it had been cut in half. More accurate would be to say that it had never fully formed, so as to maintain its connection to the formless realm. The circle below is the world, with its rules and limits established. It is the same symbol as the zero, revealing the essence of its being. Like chaos, the mother of creation, the world is the womb from which all life is born. They are both infinite in their potential, bound only by the rules of logic. That which can be is. That which cannot is not. Though we think the world to be predictable and measurable, it is a place of great mystery, something that can only be guessed at and never known.
Two is binary, the simplest of languages, alternating between one and zero to create form. Two points form a line, the simplest of shapes, giving distance and dimension. Two points in time give duration. Many more dualities are formed: mind and body, self and other, mine and yours, right and wrong, life and death. Each pair of opposites being two sides of the same coin. One implies the existence of the other, each revealing the same concept in different states.
Lying atop of each other, heaven and earth become lovers, giving birth to the next generation of gods. The numbers keep adding and multiplying, each time increasing with complexity, moving away from the simplicity of their parents towards smaller niches. They become the mother and father of the holy trinity, with Gemini taking the role of child. One and two making three.
